    Dorothy Ann (Waugh) Neal

    Dorothy Ann Neal, 
    a 99-year resident of Huntington, died Friday, June 12, 2015 at her home in 
    The Woodlands. She was 101. During her long life, Dorothy was a successful 
    businesswoman, active in civic organizations, and managed a busy household 
    with 9 children. Born in Fresno, California she was the daughter of Esker 
    Waugh and Catherine Devine. The family moved to Huntington in 1916. After 
    graduating from Huntington High School, Dorothy joined her father’s 
    construction company as finance manager. Over 27 years, Esker Waugh designed 
    and built more than 100 houses, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and the first 
    St. Mary’s Hospital expansion. In 1935, Dorothy married John G. Berthold, 
    Jr. and together they had two sons before Johnny’s death in 1952. In 1955, 
    she married Huntington physician Dr. William L. Neal, a widower with 7 young 
    children. The wedding party included his two sons, five daughters, and 
    Dorothy’s two sons. The couple met playing bridge, loved to dance, and were 
    married for fifty years before his death in 2005. She often described the 
    combined families as The Perfect Merger. Dorothy was a leader in the 
    development of Heritage Station, and a supporter of the nearby Chuck Ripper 
    Trail. She was a member of the Huntington Museum of Art, Cabell-Wayne 
    Historical Society, Friends of the Library, Southern Medical Association 
    Auxiliary, and many other charitable organizations. Dorothy is survived by 
    her nine children: Ruth Marshall of Phoenix, AZ, Tina Harris of Winter Park, 
    CO, John Neal of Sydney, Australia, Mary Ore of Atlanta, GA, Virginia Neal 
    of Boulder, CO, Jerry Berthold of Atlanta, GA, Susan Meyers of San Mateo, 
    CA, Bill Neal of Morgantown, WV, Rick Berthold of Cupertino, CA; five 
    nephews and nieces including Mary Witten Wiseman of Huntington; two sisters, 
    Mary Rogers of Huntington, and Betty Worrell of Fort Mill, SC; 15 
    grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was loved and will be missed 
    by them all. A Funeral Mass will celebrate Dorothy’s life at Our Lady of 
    Fatima Catholic Church by Father Paul Yuenger at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday June 
    17, 2015 . Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 
    held 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 16th. at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary. In lieu 
    of flowers, Dorothy requested a donation to a charity of one’s choice, or to 
    Our Lady of Fatima Church.
