    Obituary
     Elizabeth Geraldine Varney Weeks, or
Gerry (as she loved to be called), 90, finished her earthly race at
11:45a.m. on Sunday, August 27, 2017. She had been a resident of Brethren
Village in Lancaster, PA, for the past 6 years.  Gerry was born
prematurely in Varney, WV, on October 21st, 1926, but her birth was not
recorded at the county seat until November 1st. She was the second child of
Alexander & Myrtle (Meade) Varney.  She was married in Huntington, WV,
to John Neil Weeks on June 21, 1946, at Grace Gospel Church by Pastor Melvin
Efaw. She graduated from Huntington High School & took several Bible courses
at Philadelphia School of the Bible in preparation for missionary service.
Before marriage Gerry worked as a teller and retail clerk. She grew up in
Chesapeake, OH, weathered the flood of '42 then moved to Huntington, WV,
then on to Philadelphia, PA, after her marriage to John. She then spent over
33 years with her family planting five churches alongside John in Martinique
in the French West Indies. During that time, she learned to speak French and
Creole. She also taught herself how to play the pump organ as she wrote,
organized and led multiple children's programs for Christmas and other
occasions. She served in several local Martiniquan churches training young
men & women to teach children and adults how to lead music as well as
teaching ladies and young people how to cook, bake cakes and prepare simple
meals. While she accomplished these tasks she also homeschooled 3 children
up to high school grades. She served as nurse, cook, counselor, discipler,
midwife, funeral assistant and anything else she was called upon to do.
After she and John retired for the first time from Evangelical Baptist
Missions they were asked to open the field of France for a Baptist mission
agency in 1986 and served faithfully until 1994 when they retired a second
time. Then in 1997 they were asked to replace another missionary couple
while they were on a brief 1-year furlough. Gerry was always ready to serve
others as best she could.  Gerry is survived by her 3 children,
daughter Lois (husband David Richards) of Huntington, WV; daughter, Marie
(husband John Prichard) of Lancaster, PA; and son, Timothy (wife Marsha
Weeks) of Lafayette, IN; 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, as well as
a sister-in-law, Lawassa Varney, and brother-in-law, Ralph Colburn and
several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her husband, John
Neil Weeks (2008), her grandson, Jacob Silas Weeks (1992) as well as all of
her siblings, Bertha Curry, Anna Ruth VandeBunte, Herbert Varney & MaryLou
Colburn and two nieces.  A Viewing will be held in the Andrew T. Scheid
Funeral Home, 320 Blue Rock Road, Route 999, Millersville, PA 17551 on
    Wednesday evening, August 30, 2017 from 7:30p.m. to 8:30p.m.  A
Memorial Service will be held at Grace Gospel Church, 1111 Adams Ave.,
Huntington, WV 25704 on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 10:00a.m., Rev. Tim
Weeks officiating. There will be a viewing held at church on Saturday
morning from 9:00a.m. to 10:00a.m. Interment will be held at White Chapel
Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, WV. Reger Funeral Home is assisting the
family with local arrangements. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions
can be made in Elizabeth G. Weeks to The Benevolent Fund, Brethren Village,
3001 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, PA 17606.  The Weeks family would like to
express their sincere appreciation for the loving care that was provided for
Gerry at Brethren Village. They went above and beyond to make her stay
comfortable until the very end. Also, we would like to say a special thanks
to the Masonic Homes Hospice Team for their compassionate care for Gerry in
her final hours. Their genuine care, professionalism and attention to detail
was characteristic of the fine work that Hospice professionals strive to
exemplify. Last of all Gerry’s family would like to thank the Grace Gospel
Church family and Immanuel Baptist Church, Richmond, VA (their sending
church), for their consistent care and commitment to both John & Gerry over
their 50+ years of missionary service. Thank you for loving and honoring Mom
& Dad!!! May God richly bless you!
